Doc's History

Doc’s has been cooking in the Deep East Texas tradition for over a decade, but our BBQ heritage, techniques and recipes originate in the 1930's.

A love for great BBQ is in our blood. In 1932, “Papa Jack”, a local merchant, decided to expand his business to include a small BBQ restaurant in the back of his dry-goods store. Located in downtown Crockett only a block from where Davy Crockett camped on his fateful trip to the Alamo, Papa Jack’s wife ran the store while he and the kids served BBQ to the local lunch crowd. Business was good, and over the years people traveled from as far as Houston and Dallas to try their delicious Deep East Texas-style BBQ.

After Papa Jack passed away in 1973, his family continued to perfect his recipes and secret techniques through years of family cookouts, local catering and BBQ contests. Three generations later, we use the same family recipes, sauces, rubs and smoking techniques at Doc’s.

Great BBQ: it’s in our blood
